Purpose Statement:
Risk adjustment is an important part of home health and will become even more important as the industry moves toward pay for performance. With the updated overview of risk adjustment and outcome measures published in June of 2008, coding specialists need to understand the relationship between coding and risk adjustment. In addition to numerical codes, thirty-two V codes and one E code now have risk adjustment value. Understanding the role that accurate coding plays in affecting agency outcomes is a new but important piece of the puzzle in today's home health environment.
